The Guardian’s Kate Kellaway reviews Jacob’s \u00c2\u00a0Jackself\u00c2\u00a0<\/em>for the Guardian’s Poetry Book of the Day.<\/p>\n

Instead of the onerous first person \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u009d from which most autobiographical narratives hang \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Jacob Polley entrusts his story to figures from nursery rhyme, cautionary\u00c2\u00a0tales and riddles. Jackself<\/em>, his fourth collection and the recent, unexpected \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and in every way deserving \u00e2\u20ac\u201c winner of the TS Eliot prize, opens with a quotation from Gerard Manley Hopkins\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s sonnet \u00e2\u20ac\u0153My own heart let me have more pity on\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, a line that gives the book its title: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Soul, self; come, poor Jackself\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.<\/p>\n

We are in a world furnished by frost, kidney-coloured pools, rosehips and\u00c2\u00a0buzzards\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 wings. Home is Lamanby \u00e2\u20ac\u201c an ancient Cumberland place name. There is an eerie quality about the landscape that makes one consider what people amount to without possessions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

One is grateful for the humour in a work that is otherwise as disturbing and driven as a force of nature. Polley is\u00c2\u00a0confidently mysterious \u00e2\u20ac\u201c no surprise to learn he is also the author of the 2010 Somerset Maugham award-winning murder-mystery Talk of the Town<\/em><\/a>\u00c2\u00a0\"\"<\/p>\n

Polley has found a way of writing about an emotional journey cut loose from the reassurances of modern context. It is a displacement that pays dividends \u00e2\u20ac\u201c as in King Lear<\/em>, one feels one is encountering \u00e2\u20ac\u0153the thing itself: unaccommodated\u00e2\u20ac\u009d man.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
